Life from Above – Trinity Sunday
[[John 3, Romans 8]]
In this series, we celebrated Ascension Sunday and Pentecost Sunday.
- We celebrated that Jesus Christ is Lord of All and is at the right hand of God
- We celebrated that because of what Jesus Christ did on the Cross, by accepting Jesus, by believing in Him and His Finished Work on the Cross, we receive Salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God within us.
Today, we will talk about living with the Trinity (God’s Triune Community)
God the Father, God the Son – Jesus Christ, and the Spirit of God – the Holy Spirit
God is 1 Essence/Being (What are you?)
God is 3 Persons (Who are you?)
Each of the 3 Persons are 100% fully God (with identical attributes)
In Matthew 28:19, we read baptize into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – not nameS
- God the Father– not only judge, Loving Father
- God the Son– not only Lord, Savior and Brother
- God the Holy Spirit– not only calls & sanctifies, Spirit of adoption within us
1 Peter 1:2 says: FATHER CHOOSES, SON REDEEMS, SPIRIT SANCTIFIES.
Augustine describes it this way: Father as Initiator, Son as Mediator, Spirit as Unifier.
God wants us to live our life in the Trinity
- Under the Lordship of Jesus
- Through the new life of the Spirit
In Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis wrote, “The whole purpose for which we exist is to be taken into the life of God.”
Let us take a closer look at what this means…
- We are born of the Spirit
- Pentecost – great outpouring of the Holy Spirit – marked the birth of the church
- Experience of the Spirit is how we come to know God. We can know about God without the Spirit; however, to “know” know God can come from the Spirt of God, who reveals God to us.
- To be born of the Spirit is the entry point into life with God. (John 3:1-15)
- Nicodemus was told that everything he was doing to please God would never be enough.
- Nicodemus was told to share God’s life; it requires you to born again.
How to Get It?
“Peter replied, ‘Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, and to your children, and even to the Gentilesh—all who have been called by the Lordour God.‘Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, ‘Save yourselves from this crooked generation!‘Those who believedwhat Peter said were baptizedand added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.“– Acts 2:38-41 [NLT]
- Hear the Word– someone once shared Jesus with you / you have a great responsibility to share Jesus with others
- God Calls you to Himself– you could not approach God without Him first calling you to Him.
- You receive the Word – Repent & Trust Him– You have choice to make
- Baptism– Baptism is NOT necessary for salvation (Mark 16:16). However, it is important and precious. Baptized into One Body (1 Corinthians 12:13) so the Body of Christ should be present as baptism is a sign of belonging to the body of Christ. It is an expression of your union with Christ. Symbol of Jesus’ Death, Burial, Resurrection (Romans 6:4, Colossians 2:12).
Abuse of the Spirit
- Blasphemy – Mark 3:29– only unpardonable sin – refusal of Jesus Christ
- Quench—1 Thessalonians 5:19– Do not quench the Spirit. (NIV) Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. (NLT) [[Suppressive / Destructive / Non-Unifying]]
- Holy Spirit – Fire – Purifying / Enlightening / Enlivening – Don’t despise Spiritual Gifts
- NOT ALLOWING HIM TO MOVE FREELY
- Grieve—Ephesians 4:30– And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (ESV) [[“Lupe” – To cause grief / To offend]]
- Lying, angry, corrupt behavior – actions, behavior towards God and others
- ACTING OUT IN SINFUL MANNER

- We are children of the Father
- Romans 8:12-17
- Everyone who believes through faith is a child of God. (Galatians 3:26, John 1:12)
- The Spirit testifies that we are a child of God. (Romans 8:16).
- It is by the Holy Spirit that we call God “Abba” (dad/daddy)
- Jesus referred to His Father as “Abba”
- The Holy Spirit draws us into this same intimate relationship
- We are coheirs with Christ(also Romans 8)
- Because of our relationship with the Father, as sons & daughters of God, we share in Jesus’ inheritance. We become co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17).
- Receive New Rights(Galatians 4:4-7)
- Identical legal rights as blood child
- All riches in Christ & citizenship in heaven
- Share in suffering that we may share in glory(Romans 8:17)
- Jesus didn’t get to live without troubles of this world.
- Jesus didn’t get to live free of persecution.
- We don’t get to live free of suffering either.
- Paul says don’t worry about suffering – not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed to us (Romans 8:18).
- Nothing we suffer now is as bad as our inheritance is good!
- Receive New Rights(Galatians 4:4-7)
- Because of our relationship with the Father, as sons & daughters of God, we share in Jesus’ inheritance. We become co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17).
- Inheritance and Glory…
- Redemption of whole creation(Romans 8:20-21) – the whole creation will share in the freedom & glory of the children of God.
- God is using all things for our good(Romans 8:28)
- He uses everything in our lives to make us sons & daughters.
- God has predestined those who believe in Jesus to be conformedto Jesus’ likeness, and through that guarantee that Jesus is the firstborn of many brothers & sisters (8:29-30)
- What Jesus has won – the redemption of Creation – we will inherit with Him. Now through us, through Jesus, God is bringing about redemption of the whole creation.
Living with the Trinity requires has a GREAT CONNECTION open to all believers…
PRAYER – CONNECTS ALL TOGETHER
Sadly, we often neglect this vital part of our relationship
NF Song “Oh Lord”:
Which is funny, everyone will sleep in the pews
Then blame God for our problems like He sleeping on you
We turn our backs on Him, what do you expect Him to do?
It’s hard to answer prayers when nobody’s praying toyou
Prayer is not preparation for the battle. It is the battle.– Oswald Chambers
Ephesians 2:18 – Pray to the Father in the name of the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit
Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth:
Set up your kingdom in our midst.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God:
Have mercy on me, a sinner.
Holy Spirit, breath of the living God:
Renew me and all the world.
