Nurturing Love

Read Psalm 86. Today, we will be looking at God’s nurturing love (Psalm 86:15). The beginning of today’s verse describes God with words translated as merciful, full of compassion, gracious, tender, and kind. The sad truth is that many people think of God as vengeful, and avoid God because of the fear of His wrath. However, the truth is that yes God is a God who will pour out His wrath, a God who says “vengeance is mine” (John 3:36, Romans 2:5; Deuteronomy 32:35), but God is also tender, gentle, loving, “full of abounding grace and truth.” It is never good to remove the nurturing love and focus on the wrath, or to focus on the nurturing love and neglect the wrath. Both are true. God is just.

When I think of nurturing love, of tenderness, gentleness, I think of someone caring for a newborn child. Consider how we hold a newborn child. We cradle the child in our arms, supporting the head. We use extra caution. We avoid contact if we are sick. We also spend more time caring for a newborn. Decades later, I can still remember the frequent feeding schedule, the sleepless nights. Nonetheless, all of this caution and support and care is worth it— we are caring for and encouraging the growth of our child.

Now let this sink in. If you believe in Christ Jesus, you are a child of God (John 1:12). As a child, your Father, your heavenly Father, shows you a nurturing love, a love that is tender and gentle. He cares for you. He wants to encourage your growth. All of this is because of His love for you, and because He created you with a purpose in mind and He will see it to fruition. He is gentle. He shows concern for you. He cares for YOU!

Heavenly Father, we thank you today for Your nurturing love. “O Lord, You are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for Your help….You are good and do good; teach me Your statutes…Lord, Your nurturing love is tender and gentle. You are slow to get angry yet so swift to show Your faithful love. You are full of abounding grace and truth.” (Psalm 86:5 NLT, Psalm 119:68 NLT, Psalm 86:15 TPT). Amen!
