Lies are bad. Big lies. Little lies. White lies. We should strive for truth, and if that is our aim, then lies should always be frowned upon. Yes, we’ve all done it. We’ve lied to people. Some of us do it for self preservation or to make life easier. Some of us do it because we fear the consequences of the truth or we enjoy the thrill of getting something past someone. Some of us lie simply to get what we want.
Our society does not seem to be too put off by lies either. When we catch someone famous in a lie, it’s soon shrugged off. We even expect our politicians are liars. We love watching shows that point to lies like “Big Little Lies.” Bonnie Carlson, one of the characters of the show, once said, “None of us really see things as they are, we see things as we are.” This can be translated to say that none of us see things as truth — we see things through our eyes. as we want them to be for us. Sometimes this means we accept that which is true. Sometimes this means we need to change the truth a bit to make it acceptable or even believe some far from the truth. Whatever is comfortable for us, right?
Galatians 5:9 says, “Don’t you know that when you allow even a little lie into your heart, it can permeate your entire belief system?” (TPT). What this is saying is that any lie that we let in, even the little ones, will impact us. Even the smallest of small lies can have great impact. Why? Slowly we begin to change our plumb line. God and His Truth should always be the plumb line. As we accept a little lie, as we believe a little lie, as we tell a little lie, etc., this shifts slightly. We may not even notice it as first. Slowly but surely, the line moves. It’s no longer the plumb line. It’s no longer what God has said is true. Even a little lie that is left into your heart will permeate your entire belief system. The line you skirt suddenly moves. It moves away from God’s Truth and to whatever you’ve slowly accepted. Friends, it doesn’t happen overnight. It’s one choice and then another, and then another after that one. It’s a slow shift, a barely seen little lie that permeates. It’s a few little lies. Before you know it, the line you once skirted cannot be seen. It moved so far from its previous position.
Today, you have a choice. Truth or lies. Tomorrow, you have the same choice. Truth or lies. Remember friends, “When you allow even a little lie in to your heart, it can permeate your entire belief system.” What choices shall you make today? Will they be choices that stand on Truth?
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Truth. Lord, help us to live out Your Truth. Lord, help us to live with the belt of truth. Help us to navigate life in Your Truth. Help us to be truth bearers. Open our eyes to the little lies and big lies we have left permeate our hearts and minds. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
