In Your Heart

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). Your heart determines your steps. Your heart directs your journey through life. Today’s verse says that we should take the words of God and put them in our hearts. With the Word in our hearts, that which is good and honorable and wise will be more likely to flow from it. You get out what you put in, right?

How can we get God’s Word in our heart? This question isn’t a difficult one. We read God’s Word. As we read His Word with open eyes and an open heart, the Word begins to be written on our heart. As you read God’s Word, your love for God and His Word grows. Then as you are doing life, you remember His Word. The Holy Spirit will help you recall His Word. The Spirit helps you to recall what you already have in your heart.

By reading this devotion with these Bible verses, you are actively taking a step to put God’s Word in your heart. Every morning, every night, and every time between — you can take steps to place His Word in your heart. Read your Bible. Don’t set large goals. Show up and read. Read your physical Bible. Download the Bible app so you have it everywhere you go throughout your day. Be intentional with opening up the Word. Again, don’t set large goals. We often like to sit down to a table and stuff our faces. Afterward, we feel overwhelmed by food — nauseated and with no desire to touch another plateful of food. It’s proven that we can only take in so much in a sitting. You aren’t trying to read the entire Bible in a sitting. Instead, take a bite. Chew upon it. Enjoy it. Ask God what He wants to share with you. Later, take another bite. And another. More frequent encounters of the Word will provide you with good solid food to build your life upon.

You will find these encounters to be fruitful. Highlight verses you want to return to and keep a journal. Place Scripture throughout your living space. Listen to worship music and take in God’s Word as you praise Him. Continue to read daily devotions and participate in Bible studies. Read His Word. Unfold His Word. Love His Word. Then let it flow.

“These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart.” – Deuteronomy 6:6 [CSB]
